The chief materials used in most of the buildings were wood and the earth itself. Creating these ancient buildings out of wood and earth ramming techniques made the overall structure very flexible. The use of columns, beams, purlins which are connected by tentons and mortises create intricate design. Dougong, which is a system of brackets placed between a crossbeam and the top of a column is a unique design of Chinese Architecture.

Gorgeous Ornaments
Intricate designs were an expression of the Chinese way of life. Color was used as a reflection of local customs or particular needs. Wall paintings, floor patterns, inscribed boards, carved beams, and colorfully painted rafters are commonly seen on all styles of buildings. Additions to the outside of the structures such as stone lions, ornamental columns, flowers, and screen walls link specific customs to the locals.
